Harlingen’s residents are a robust bunch, and are able to stay in top shape thanks to quality medical care that’s affordable and obtainable right here at home.
For upwards of a century, Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen has been meeting the health needs of the community and, along with its sister facility in Brownsville, continues to grow and expand to meet the requirements of the Rio Grande Valley.
The facility is a Level III trauma center and also an accredited diabetes education center. It also offers health screenings, health fairs, support groups and other related educational services free to the community.
Also stepping up to meet the region’s needs is Harlingen Medical Center, which has seen so much growth and positive input during its first seven years of operation that it plans to expand its physical facilities over the next few years, says Todd Mann, chief executive officer.
“We’ve certainly outgrown our physical plant since we opened, and so we have multiple projects on the horizon that will help expand our core businesses, which are cardiovascular care and women’s services. We’ve just seen our core service lines grow so much quicker than we anticipated. The hospital was designed to expand. We’re going up and out, as well as remodeling our interior.”
The acute-care hospital offers a 24-hour emergency center, unlimited access to patients for family members, and a complement of educational and outreach programs. The ability to add such services while ensuring that it provides basic medical care strengthens the hospital while also making the community a better place to live, Mann says.
“We are one-third physician owned, so they have a very formalized role in setting the direction of the hospital,” he says. “But we also get a lot of community input as far as what’s needed and how we can balance everything to provide the most effective care that we can. That’s why we look very closely at our existing services as we consider adding new ones. If you’re just out there chasing new technology and not being effective, then you’re not going to do well.”
He points to the hospital’s recent recognition on the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals list for its cardiac care as an example of how HRC focuses on specific services as a point of excellence. Mann says the community benefits when its medical providers take such an approach.
“You don’t need to leave the valley to have quality health care; any type of need can be met within this community,” he says. “We’re a small hospital, and we only try to focus on those service lines where we can excel, but in terms of health care, you can get anything taken care of within this community.”
